Defero Shines a Spotlight on Local Heroes with L&S Waste

At Defero Communications, we’re proud to support campaigns that put community at the heart of a brand’s story. Our recent work with L&S Waste Management on their inaugural Local Heroes campaign has done just that, shining a spotlight on the extraordinary efforts of unsung individuals across Hampshire.
Recognising True Community Spirit
L&S Waste announced Frank Dunster, operator of the Hayling Rescue service, as the winner of their first ever Local Hero Award and the recipient of a £1,000 cash prize.
Open to nominations across the PO and SO postcode areas, the award was designed to celebrate the outstanding contributions that local heroes make to their communities every day.
About Frank Dunster
A highly decorated ex-RNLI member, Frank has provided a one-man rescue service since 1984, covering Chichester Harbour, Langstone Harbour, Bracklesham and Hayling Bays. He personally funded the construction of Hayling Rescue25 years ago, initially paying for all costs through his pension before the service began receiving occasional donations from the local boating community.
Frank lives aboard the rescue boat for most of the year, providing round-the-clock cover. Each year, he is directly involved in around 200 rescues, clocking up more than 600 engine hours in the process.
Praise from the Judges
L&S Waste Managing Director Mick Balch said: “A number of people came forward with nominations for Frank, and for us he stood out as a deserving winner. Frank gives his time freely and has dedicated the best part of his life to helping others. We are delighted to announce him as the recipient of our first ever Local Hero Award and I hope our donation will make a difference to his Hayling Rescue service for the remainder of this season and beyond.”
The award winner was selected by a judging panel that included Hampshire’s very own local hero, Brian Wood MC, a former Colour Sergeant in the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment, awarded the Military Cross for gallantry in combat.
Explaining the decision, Brian said: “Frank epitomises the spirit of what a local hero truly means. For over 40 years he has demonstrated incredible selfless commitment and humility.
Choosing a winner from the sheer volume of entrants was by no means straightforward, but ultimately, the judges were looking for individuals who have gone above and beyond in their pursuit to help others. Frank certainly fits that role.”
Mick Balch added: “We would like to thank everyone who nominated someone for our Local Heroes campaign, and of course the nominees themselves for their amazing efforts. It’s been a humbling experience to hear of the everyday acts of courage, commitment, generosity and care that exist in our community.”
A Campaign with Lasting Impact
For Defero, the Local Heroes campaign highlights the power of PR to connect brands with the communities they serve. By telling Frank’s story and celebrating the everyday heroism of local people, L&S Waste has not only raised awareness of its own values but has helped shine a light on an incredible individual who has dedicated his life to saving others.
