L&S Waste Management provide pedal power for London Youth Charity

Fareham based waste management firm, L&S Waste, is helping a London based youth charity by donating old discarded bicycles for a restoration and recycling project.

L&S Waste has so far provided dozens of bikes to the Streets of Growth charity, which helps engage youths and young adults in some of the most deprived wards of East London, in life skills and educational programmes.

Streets of Growth run a regular bike recycling workshop each Tuesday evening for 12-19 year olds, with the aim of teaching youngsters basic mechanical skills. It also helps those with an interest in a bike related career to obtain the relevant qualifications. The bikes are then offered to local families that desperately need a bike but perhaps cannot afford one.

L&S Waste Management managing director, Mick Balch, said: “We receive a large number of old bicycles in various states of disrepair at our waste recycling facilities in Portsmouth, Fareham and Southampton. The old saying that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure is certainly the case with these old bikes and we happy to dig them out and clean them up for this worthwhile cause.”

Founder of the Streets Of Growth project, Darren Way, said: “The bike restoration project is a fantastic scheme that helps young people develop basic mechanical skills. We are extremely grateful to L&S Waste for helping us source this supply of old bicycles. It may seem like a small thing, but a project like this kind of project can give these kids a real sense of achievement and can make a big difference to their lives.”
